Garment Sewing by Jeni Baker

Hi there! Hope everyone has had an enjoyable weekend.  Ours has been quiet, thankfully.  I managed to push myself too hard last weekend, and ended up with a pretty unproductive week.  I think between the holiday weekend and having a few too many projects going at once, it just wasn't working.  I felt like I was spinning my wheels! So things week I'm going to try to see a few projects through so I at least feel like I'm making progress :)

For this weekend I choose to work on a few easy things, like tracing pattern pieces and cutting pieces for two new garments! I'm finally making the Darling Ranges dress, after talking about making it for what feels like forever! I also cut out fabric for a Washi dress!

US Map Embroidery by Jeni Baker

Last night I finished my US Map embroidery! Yay! I have been working on this project since June 2011! I am so happy with how it's turned out so far.  Now to decide what to do with it! I'm thinking about turning it into a mini quilt like this one!

I used this coloring book page to draw out the embroidery.

Hoping to dive into some more chain piecing tonight! That counts as pretty mindless sewing, doesn't it? :)

Sneak Peek by Jeni Baker

A little sneak peek of a project I'll be sharing this week! I managed to mess up the zipper a bit on this, which meant not so nice ends. Oh well! It's still functional!

I am so excited about my next small project! Have you ever used this Vinyl Fuse product from Pellon? It turns your fabric into laminated cotton! I can't wait to try it!

A lot of my attention this week was given to kicking off Travel Handmade on the Sewing Summit blog! In case you missed it, we started the month-long series with informational posts on bag making basics! We talked about Interfacing, Zippers, and Purse Hardware.  You can keep up with all the posts here.

Whether you're attending Sewing Summit or not, I'm sure you could use some bag inspiration/tutorials right? Check out the Travel Handmade Pinterest board for loads of both!

On Saturday, Sara (the owner of The Sewcial Lounge) and I headed to the Wisconsin Quilt Expo! We didn't have a lot of time to look around, but still managed to get a taste of everything! And we even found some fabric! Most of my budget was blown at the seriously sweet booth of Sew Mod, an online fabric boutique!

  8. I'm planning on a shirt from that Indie print too, it just seems perfect for garments! Thank you for the information on the vinyl fuse, I want to make a box bag for my husband to take on work trips with lamination, but he is just NOT interested in any of the ones available.

  9. I use a different brand, but the fusible vinyl is what I use on my makeup brush rolls (http://www.etsy.com/shop/knitty34?section_id=10671740). I like it, although it takes a bit of playing around to get it to work just how you want it to. I would suggest cutting a small piece and trying out different settings on your iron and different application methods (ironing from the back ironing from the front with the paper layer, etc). It's cool once you figure out the best methods though!

  15. I can't wait to see your dresses.. and that cutie pie project coming up this week. I have spent way too much time this morning browsing that Pinterest board! Seriously, it's right up there at the top of my list for resources from now on. So many adorable bags... so little time!

  16. Love your stitched map! We had a similar embroidered map that hung next to our kitchen table when we were kids. That map was the center of many table time discussions as we discussed school lessons, relatives that lived out of state and our family vacations. My sister now has the picture hanging near her kitchen table. Keeping the tradition alive :)
