Fall Quilt Market 2012

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

Wow! I don't even know where to begin! First of all, it was so weird not being in this space over the last week.  That's the longest break I've taken in over a year.  I was so hoping to blog while I was at Quilt Market, but I just couldn't swing it.  I left my hotel room at about 8:30am everyday and the earliest I got back at night was 10pm! Needless to say I feel like I could sleep for a week! :)

I flew into Houston on Thursday and was greeted at the airport by my sweet friends Jacey and Brenda! We met up with Rossie and Lynn and grabbed some lunch. The perfect way to start off a crazy weekend, I'm sad I didn't get to see more of them! As soon as I arrived at the convention center it was build, build, build! I worked with the Art Gallery Fabrics team unpacking, building and organizing the booth. We continued the next day and managed to squeeze in a few Schoolhouses too! On Saturday the show officially opened! Ready for lots of photos?

As a part of the larger Art Gallery Fabrics booth, I shared a space with Angela Walters. Angela was showing her first collection, Textures.  I was also showing my first collection, Color Me Retro! It was a lot of fun stitching up projects to fill these cubbies! I'll share photos of all the projects later this week!

It was a mad-dash to get all of these sewn up between Sewing Summit and Quilt Market.  I had approximately two fat quarter sized strike-offs of each print to make everything you see in my booth! I was so happy with how far I was able to stretch it with the help of Art Gallery's fabulous blenders and solids

Here you can see a better peek at the Art Gallery Fabrics booth.  That's Sarah Watson, one of the talented new designers, and Anais, the force behind AGF's social media!

Pat Bravo's booth featured one of her new collections for Fall, Rock n' Romance! It was so fun and edgy! I loved the lettering and all the small details, she even had a guitar in there!

Bari J went above and beyond with a fantastic ruffle bedspread and accessories! She was showing her collection for Fall, Splendor 1920! So much goodness!

Sarah Watson's booth was amazing! She drew with chalk all over the walls and even won Best New Exhibitor Booth! She was showing her collection for Fall, Luxe in Bloom!

A little peek into the new Art Gallery Fabrics catalog! How crazy cool it is to see my collection in there! I can't wait to have sample yardage of my fabrics so I can sew, sew, sew! It will hit stores in February!

It's almost impossible to come home from Quilt Market without any fabric! Picked up some Modernology and Paradise both by Pat Bravo! Thanks Pat! :)

Seriously, exhibiting with Art Gallery Fabrics was such an amazing experience.  It really is one big family, between Pat and Walter Bravo, their son Alex, and the amazing women who work tirelessly behind the scenes, Anais, Angie, Kathy, Laura, and Marcela.  I had so much fun getting to know everyone better and laughing more than I have in a long, long time.  They really made me feel like I was part of the family, and I feel so happy, grateful, and lucky to be working with them!

I can't forget the other AGF designers, Bari, Sarah, and Angela.  You ladies are awesome, I really enjoyed hanging out with you! Your support means a lot!

Everyone worked really hard to make this weekend a success, but I tell you what, we had a lot of fun too! :)

Phew! I could say so much more! I saw and met some really awesome people this weekend! I am excited to see the photos trickle in, I wish I had taken more! Thanks to everyone who stopped by!  You can see a few more photos that I took on flickr, here.

And finally, HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

I am SO excited to finally share all the projects I've been working on with my fabric! I'm going to try my best to blog this weekend, but if I'm unable to, I will at the very least share photos on the In Color Order Facebook Page!

Hi there! Is everyone having a good week so far? I was hoping to have a recap of Sewing Summit today (let's be honest, yesterday!), but it's just not going to happen quite yet.  It's been a Color Me Retro sewing frenzy over here, and my brain is starting to turn to mush! So, here are a few snapshots from Instagram (I'm @jenib320) instead! You can view my Instagram feed online, here.

Today I've been playing with scraps!

Yesterday I bound and bound and bound some more.  Doing all the binding in one day was not one of my better ideas, haha.

Color Hex Quilt Pattern

Color Hex Quilt Pattern

I'm excited to share with you my newest quilt pattern, Color Hex! I created this quilt for my Creative Fabric Selection class at Sewing Summit, but I knew I wanted to share it with you all too!

Hexie Pouch by Jeni Baker
Hexie Pouch, a photo by Jeni Baker on Flickr.
It was inspired by a pouch that I made earlier in the year using english paper pieced hexagons to create a color wheel! So many color wheel type quilts are circular, naturally.  I wanted to do something a little different and hexagons seemed like the way to go!

Color Hex Quilt

This quilt uses half-hexagons so there are no funky Y-seams or anything! The quilt finishes at 45" square, perfect for a new baby or to hang in your sewing room!

Okay, you really just want to see more photos, right?

I used a Blooming Poppies tutorial on quilting concentric circles, it was really helpful! I used my walking foot, and quilted it with Aurifil 50wt #2600 thread.  I love how it sinks into the quilt!

The pattern also includes a second version of the quilt, Floral Hex!  They're constructed in the same way, but the floral version uses 19 prints, creating a giant flower!

You can find the pattern for this quilt in my shop, here.

I'm back! Oh my goodness am I exhausted! I spent Wednesday - Sunday traveling and attending Sewing Summit in Salt Lake City, Utah.  It was awesome!  I'm excited to share my experience and more about my class hopefully this week.  At this point I'm trying to stay awake and get caught up.  Quilt Market is in NINE days, so there are preparations for that too!

The Sewing Summit teachers were asked to donate an item to a silent auction set up for the Sewing Summit scholarship fund. I couldn't help myself, I had to bid on this mini quilt made by my friend Christina of The Sometimes Crafter.  Lucky for me, I won! Can't wait to hang it up!

Adventures in Thrifting

Thrifting by Jeni Baker
Thrifting, a photo by Jeni Baker on Flickr.
Hi There! Earlier this week I shared the above photo of my recent thrifting finds! I thought it might be fun to share with you a few of the things that didn't come home with me! So, would you like to take a trip to a few antique shops? Let's go!

How cute are these tiny tupperwares? They look like mini cake carriers! Maybe for cupcakes?

Loved this vintage quilt top, so many cool prints.

Sometimes the packaging is more interesting than the item itself! Take my word for it, the shoes weren't anything too special!

*Sigh*, I really wanted to come home with these Pyrex bowls! But, they were too expensive!

This little condiment set kills me.  It's so little!

Another thing I wish I could have brought home! One of Strawberry Shortcake's friends, new in the box!

I have a thing at the moment for vintage tins.  I don't know what it is, I can't get enough of them!

Really liked the plaid print on this vanity chair.  It was super bright! Wouldn't mind bringing that phone home either!

Yep, love teak and stainless steel together.  Two great serving pieces!

Last but certainly not least, it was REALLY hard not to bring this cathedral window quilt home with me.  Doesn't it feel so modern? I spent a long time looking at it! :)

I hope that was fun! Next time I'll share some thrift store shots, I'm usually going in and out of thrift stores so quickly, I forgot to take any photos!

Happy Thrifting!
