Presenting: Nordika

Nordika by Jeni Baker

Happy Monday! It is finally the day! The day to share with you, Nordika! I'm not going to keep you too long from all the photos, but I must tell you a bit about it!

Fall deep into the Scandinavian countryside with this rich collection, where meadows meet the sea. Sweet florals & bold geometrics collide to tell the story of Nördika.  I imagine some small cozy cottage out in the lowlands hidden away somewhere in Northern Europe. A place where it is equal parts sweet and moody, light and dark, warm and cool.

Nordika is my second collection with Art Gallery Fabrics.  I certainly felt much more confident and comfortable working on this collection in comparison to my first.  I suppose this is natural with anything that is new to you! It has a tad bit more "Jeni" infused into it, for sure!

These prints were inspired by all things Scandinavian, or Nordic! It still has a very retro vibe, drawing inspiration from my love of mid-century modern decor.

Nordika - Alpine Valley by Jeni Baker

The first colorway is Alpine Valley featuring sweet mint, turquoise, gray, mustard, yellow, burgandy, black and white.

Nordika - Frost Valley by Jeni Baker

The second colorway is Frost Valley featuring burgandy, deep red, coral, yellow, mint, teal, grays, black and white.

I love how deep the colors are, I think they'll be perfect for Fall! It's a much richer palette than I'm used to working with, but it was great to work outside of my comfort zone. I'm especially glad that I took the risk on the black, I think it fits really nicely, and grounds the entire collection.

So what's in the name?  Well, it's actually a funny story.  My deep dark secret is, I'm terrible at naming things.  Seriously.  I have a hard time coming up with creative names.  The collection was getting closed to being finished and I had a sheet of paper filled with words, trying to find a creative combination or play on a word that fit.  I was stuck so I called my Mom to brainstorm.  She knew what the collection was about/inspired by but she had not seen it yet.  After I rattled off the words I had and about 20 minutes of going back and forth, she came up with Nordika.  It was a perfect match! Thanks Mom! :)

Nordika - Whimsicöl Panel

My favorite print from the collection is... the Whimsicöl Panel! It's a full 44", selvedge to selvedge panel, featuring a mystical landscape on one end and fading into a meadow of flowers!  I have so many projects planned for this panel, I'll be sharing a few more from Quilt Market later this week!

The panel comes in two colors, one for each colorway!

I'm really proud of this collection, I hope you like it! If you're a shop and you've ordered it, make sure to let me know and I'll list you under the Fabric tab above! If you'd like to see Nordika in your local shop, make sure to ask for it!

Nordika will be shipping in July, only about a month away now! In the mean time, for lots more photos, see the Nordika Flickr Set!

  14. I had heard so many comments about your booth and Nordika--I love seeing it in person. It does, indeed, remind me a lot of some of the fabrics I could choose from when I was a kid. Love the panels too. I also love the fact that I could make a wonderful quilt from just a few of the prints.

You call it Nordika when you write the post which is a really beautiful name. I hope you don't mind me asking, as a native Swedish speaker, the use of the letter "Ö" in the name really messes it up for me. ^^ Why did you choose to spell/name it so? "Nörd" in Swedish means geek, and not really in the cool way - so it makes for a really weird way to pronounce it, as "O" and "Ö" are very different letters?
