How to Quilt Wavy Lines with a Walking Foot (video!)

Happy Thursday! Today I have a video tutorial to share with you! After I shared my finished scrappy bear paw baby quilt, a reader reached out about my go-to wavy quilting technique. I had two baby quilts basted and waiting to be quilted, so I decided to film a little video tutorial on how I do that style quilting.

This is one of my favorite ways to quilt with my walking foot. It's especially good (in my opinion!) for small quilts or pillows. I've actually been quilting things in this way for almost 13 years! I went back through my archives and the oldest project I could find was a mug rug I made in March 2011! Since then I've quilted many mini quilts, pillows and small quilts using this technique. I love it for lots of reasons. First and foremost, it's fun and relaxing to quilt this design. I find it very forgiving, and it really allows you to embrace imperfection. No need to stress about keeping your lines straight, they're meant to be wonky! I also like that the gentle curves soften the straight lines of the patchwork.

Without futher ado, onto the video tutorial! You'll need to equip your machine with a walking foot, and get yourself a fresh needle. I like to use a 3.00 stitch length when quilting in this way.

Here are a few recent small quilts that I've quilted with wavy lines:

  1. Thanks for the tutorial! Did you spray baste your quilt sandwich before hand? If so would love some pointers of your process. Or perhaps you already have a blog post on that subject. Beth in AL

    1. I did spray baste! I don't at this time! My biggest tip is just to make sure everything is as smooth as possible before starting. I usually lightly iron my batting as well as the other layers. I also always tape the backing to my surface with masking tape.

  2. As I've just done something pretty similar with wavy lines on a baby quilt but seemed to have problems with the pressure, I have a Bernina and the adjustment on the side goes from a 1 to 50!!
Difficult to find the best setting. My lines are not nowhere as near good as yours, I see from the video that a) I should have been going a little faster and b) holding and moving the quilt as you have done in the video. Thanks so much, very helpful.
