Happy Friday! I love making pincushions, so I thought why not make one with hexagons on it.

Sewing Level: Intermediate
Materials:
- (1) 6" and (1) 2.5" squares of background fabric
- (6) 2.5" print squares
- (1) 6" print square
- Coordinating thread
- Marking pen/chalk
- Pincushion filling of choice (I use crushed walnut shells)

1. Using your 2.5" print and background squares, baste seven hexagons. If you've never sewn hexagons before, make sure to check out Christina's tutorial for making, basting, and stitching them, here.
2. Arrange your hexagons into a flower with the background hexagon in the center. Stitch together by hand.
3. Give your flower a quick press, then clip your basting threads and carefully pull out your papers.
4. Take your 6" background square, and mark out a 5 3/8" square in the center with a marking pen or chalk. I love these Clover Chaco Liners.
5. Use your drawn square to center your hexagon flower on the background square.
6. Pin your hexagon flower in place. Top-stitch in place, using a very small seam allowance by machine.
7. Place your 6" print square right sides together with your background square/hexagon flower.
8. Sew using a 1/4" seam allowance around all four sides, leaving a 2" opening on one side.
9. Turn right sides out, careful poking out the corners. Fill with your filling of choice. I like to use crushed walnut shells. This way they can double as pattern weights!
10. Carefully handstitch the opening closed.

I'm excited to share three (woo!) finished quilts with you! Now don't worry, these didn't come together overnight! I've been working on them over the last three months. I am a terrible quilt giver, I get so attached to them throughout the process and then it's hard for me to let go. I'm finding it's easier if I start a quilt for a specific person, I tend to get less attached from the beginning. Anyways, back on topic! I just gifted three quilts, so now I can share them! :)
Bella Patchwork Quilt - This first quilt is for my younger brother, Andrew. It's actually an early Christmas present! It's quite early, but my next two are late, so it evens out, haha. He picked out some Echo fabric by Lotta Jansdotter and made pillows for his dorm room, so I decided to make him up a throw quilt to match using Lotta's new line, Bella. I did simple patchwork squares, my favorite! I used 5.5" squares to get the most out of the fat quarters and added a few white solid squares to fill it out.
As always, backed in a sheet!
Red, White, & Black All Over Quilt - The next quilt is for my Mom for her birthday! It was back in June, but wasn't done quite in time, so I held on to it until we came home this week. (Am I the only one paranoid about mailing quilts? I always avoid it if I can!) This quilt uses vintage bear claw blocks that were made by my grandmother. I sashed them and added cornerstones! It's wall sized and is finished up with vintage fabric for the back and binding!
How cute is that vintage fox fabric!?
Rescued Log Cabin Quilt - The final quilt is for my Dad! It's for Father's Day! I thrifted these vintage log cabin blocks a few months ago. They were already sewn up into two strips, so I left them intact. Added in some solid fabric to space them out, and voila! I wanted it to look rugged and manly, I think this is pretty close! It's backed in a really cool vintage sheet and is also throw sized!
There we have it! That was a quick run through for three finished quilts! I really enjoyed working on these quilts for my family. I think it might be Michael's turn for a quilt next! :)
