What I'm Working on Right Now

Friday, September 6, 2024

Happy Friday! I had a big backlog of finished projects, but today I thought it would be nice to share some things I'm working on right now.

I have two (very different) sets of 12 quilt blocks that have been sitting around for a while, and I've decided to get them both finished up into quilts. The first set is a bunch of warm colored blocks from the first virtual quilt bee I participated in (3x6 bee!), back in 2010. These are long overdue to become a quilt! I've decided to make a smaller version of my Interlaced Quilt. Right now I'm working on the in between blocks, but it shouldn't take long to get this one sewn into a finished quilt top!

This quilt top came together in July! I have a bunch of 2" strips leftover from when I used to make Wrapped Wreath kits, and I wanted to use some of them up. Originally I was going to make a pillow and I made two smaller blocks but wasn't happy with how either turned out. So I made those two blocks larger and then made two more to make this quilt top! I don't always mix stripes in with the florals, so it's a bit different from my typical mix!

I'm currently working on quilting this quilt. The plan is to do some wavy lines in both directions to create a wavy checkerboard quilting pattern!

I've been working on a new pattern! This one has been kicking around my brain for more than 10 years, and it's finally time to get it out!

I started another soft and subtle quilt. This time using my Candyweb block pattern.

I'm really loving how it's coming along. I wasn't sure what it would look like with such low contrast, but I think it's still really cool! I was planning to stop at four blocks, but now I think I've talked myself into nine, so I have five more to make! Taking a little break from this to work on other things at the moment, but I'll come back to it soon!

I've been on a bit of a pillow making spree! I've made three covers in the last few weeks. I've thrifted a bunch of nice pillow forms and I'm slowly covering them all!! I love making pillow covers, they're so satisfying.

Hopefully I can share some of these projects in full soon! I'm struggling to make time to take good photos (baby's nap does not line up with the good light in the sewing room) and do all the computer work behind publishing a blog post at the moment. I would love to show up here more regularly! For now, I'm doing the best I can. Hope you're all well!

Hand Dyed Lawn On Point Quilt

Friday, August 30, 2024

Happy Friday! I have a finished quilt to share today!! This one has been done for a while (Spring 2023), but I only managed to take photographs of it last month, so here we are!

I started this quilt in late 2022 in an effort to use up some of my hand dyed indigo fabric stash. Specifically I wanted to make a quilt with all of the lawn that I had dyed over the years. I thought I would make a lot more garments with it, so I would dye a yard or two of lawn almost every time I mixed up a vat of indigo dye. In the end, I only made two garments, a tank and a beach cover up. The tank was given to a friend since I didn't wear it, and the beach cover up was way too big. So I started by harvesting the fabric from the cover up and then collecting all the dyed lawns together. I dyed a little more to have enough for a backing too. All the lawn used in this quilt is Cambridge Cotton Lawn* by Robert Kaufman, which is my favorite lawn for dyeing!

If you're interested in learning about indigo dyeing, or just seeing some of the prints I dyed for this quilt in their entirety, see this post: DIY Indigo Fabric Dyeing Tutorial

Like with most of my other indigo quilts I knew I wanted to keep the design simple. I usually stick with large pieces so you can really appreciate the fabrics. I played around with a lot of ideas but ended up deciding on a simple on point quilt. It has a bit of a woven look and uses nice big squares.

This quilt came together fast! The cutting and piecing were both quick, I remember that!

It was so fun to revisit all these fabrics. Many of them were dyed at retreats with friends, or with family and neighbors. I dyed some at cabins, in our apartment backyard, and in our backyard here in CT. I've just looked back, I've been playing around with indigo dyeing since 2013, so more than 10 years! Great times.

This is a big quilt, it finishes at 66"x88" after a run through the washer and dryer. I used Quilter's Dream Bamboo batting* (bamboo, silk, tencel and cotton blend), which is lightweight and so lovely with lawn. It makes for a quilt with beautiful drape, perfect for summer. This is my third lightweight lawn (voile) quilt, see the other two here: Little Folks Voile Summer Quilt and Liberty Lawn Giant Vintage Star Quilt.

The quilting was done by Katie of Autumn Moon Quilting, who did such a nice job. I love this "Rosemary" quilting design in her library, I'll definitely be using it again on a future quilt! Katie is really great about helping you determine the right quilting design size/density. In my opinion, for a lawn quilt this is especially important because you don't want the quilting to be too dense and compromise the texture/drape of the lawn.

The entire quilt is lawn from the top to the backing and binding. I didn't have enough of a single piece to use for the binding, so it ended up scrappy!

Between this quilt and my recent indigo baby quilt, I have greatly depleted my stash of indigo fabrics! Which just means I get to dye more!! :) I already had one dye session this summer, but I am hoping to squeeze in one more while the weather is still nice. If you've never tried it and are at all interested, I highly recommend it. Grab a friend (or two) and make a dye date!

Happy Quilting!

Recent Lined Drawstring Gift Bags

Friday, August 23, 2024

Happy Friday! Today I have a few recent drawstring gift bags to share! These were all made in the last few months with my Lined Drawstring Bag Pattern.

First up, this super scrappy indigo drawstring bag! This bag was using leftover blocks and scraps from two indigo quilts, my Indigo June Baby Quilt and Indigo Courthouse Steps Quilt. I pieced the blocks and scraps into "fabric" that was large enough to cut two exterior main pieces from. The accent and lining are also scrappy, cut from white on white fabrics that I over-dyed with indigo.

I've never made a bag quite like this and I had a lot of fun with it! I want to experiment more with using up leftovers and stretching the materials to fit. This is a project size bag, and it was made to gift the indigo baby quilt in! It's finished simply with white paracord for the ties.

This next bag was also a gift, for my friend Laura! She loves hello kitty too, so I took that as an opportunity to use some hello kitty fabrics! We swapped yarn earlier in the year, and I packed it up in this bag. I wanted to play around with some pom pom trim, and decided to add it to the seam between the accent and lining. I think it adds to the overall playfulness of the bag!

This is the everything size. I used the yellow measuring tape twill for this, which I don't use often!

I know I made this bag to gift another baby quilt, but I've managed to forget which quilt this held!! Whoops. This bag was made with prints from my Curiosities fabric collection. It's simple and sweet.

This is an artist size bag, which is my go-to size for gifting baby quilts. It's finished with paracord.

Last but not least, a cat bag! We wanted to share some of Dusty's favorite treats (any of the dehydrated treats, but especially the chicken) with one of Michael's co-workers and I thought it would be fun to send the treats inside a kitty themed bag!

I cut into some precious Aneela Hoey kitty fabric and actually remembered to use one of my woven tags. Another opportunity to use the yellow measuring tape twill and this time some cute wooden beehive beads.

Pattern: Lined Drawstring Bag Pattern by Jeni Baker (me).
Notions: Twill tape, paracord, and wooden beads.

Happy Wednesday! Today I have a little shop news to share as well as a quick updates on a few recent vintage sheet projects I've been working on.

There are more vintage sheet fat quarter bundles in the shop! This round features lots of great florals in whites and creams for your next soft and subtle project! All the sheets were salvaged from local thrift stores. Find them in my shop here: Vintage Sheet Fat Quarter Bundles

I finally was able to get a flat shot of my vintage sheet plus quilt that I made this Spring! It was so big that it didn't fit either of my photo taking spots here, so I took it back to Ohio with me to photograph on my parent's barn.

I also photographed my vintage sheet side braid quilt while I was home!! I don't think I've shared any of this quilt here on the blog, I hope to write up a post about it soon. It was also the first vintage sheet quilt I've had longarm quilted, and it's so dreamy!!

I love having garland or bunting hanging in our living room and I recently made myself a new one! I think I need to take it down to get a proper photo, but here is a little peek. I love how it turned out! It's so cheerful.

Right now I'm working on a new pillow cover! I have a big pillow form to cover, and decided to make the pillow from my giant vintage star quilt pattern. Mostly because I cannot find the pillow that I made when I released the pattern. I know it's in the house somewhere, but it honestly seemed faster to just make another than search too hard for it!

I've been really loving working so much with sheets again, it's so satisfying!

Giant Vintage Star Baby Quilt in Geometric Bliss

Tuesday, July 23, 2024

Happy Tuesday! Today I have a recent baby quilt finish to share!

My stash of baby quilts that haven't been claimed by baby girl has become severely depleted. So when Michael's coworker had a baby this Spring, I didn't have a quilt ready for gifting! I decided to make a baby quilt using my Giant Vintage Star Quilt Pattern. I've actually only made one of these previously, the version I made when writing the pattern! Thought it would be a good one to revisit.

I used fabrics from my Geometric Bliss* fabric collection.

I had to use the big strip for the backing! It makes a great back in my opinion! I kept the binding pretty minimal, just some straight lines.

It's bound in the little stripe print!

You can find the Giant Vintage Star Quilt Pattern in my online shop.

Of course the quilt needed a matching bag! I made the Artist size from my Lined Drawstring Bag Pattern. This is my go-to size for gifting baby quilts. I used more prints from the same color way of Geometric Bliss*.

The bag is finished off with some nylon paracord.

Pattern: Giant Vintage Star Quilt Pattern and Lined Drawstring Bag Pattern
Fabric: Geometric Bliss*

Upcycling a Towel and an Apron into Bags

Tuesday, July 9, 2024

Happy Tuesday! I've started going to the Goodwill outlet on a regular basis, and it's been such fun hunting for treasures, especially textiles. I need to put together another adventures in thrifting post soon, to share all the things I've found lately! Today I want to share two projects that I made using textiles that I salvaged from the outlet. I loved working on these projects and it's inspiring me to continue to upcycle more textiles!

I have a real soft spot for vintage towels and I've amassed a good collection of them over the years. We use them every day! I got excited when I spotted this one, only to realize that it had been altered. It was amongst a bunch of vintage aprons, so I believe it had been turned into an apron at one time. It was so cute, I bought it anyways and figured I'd come up with a project later.

I ended up turning the towel piece into a dopp kit! I was inspired by Joanne Sunny K and her work with vintage towels.

This is a larger version of the boxy pouch from my Triplizip Zipper Pouch Pattern. I also left it unlined. The dimensions ended up a bit big since I wanted to use as much of the towel piece as possible!

I love that if I spill something in this bag, it's a towel! It feels so practical. Would also make a great beach bag. My gears are turning for other towel bags!

I reused the original tag as an embellishment on the back.

This was such a fun project, I loved making it. I really like the way that the floral pattern lines up around the zipper. I kept things really simple to finish it up and used some webbing for the handle.

The second bag that I made was a drawstring bag! This is the project size from my Lined Drawstring Bag Pattern.

I found this vintage apron on the same trip as the towel piece! I really liked the fabric, but I don't wear aprons very often, especially not half aprons. I grabbed it anyways, knowing I'd probably unpick it for the fabric.

I did end up unpicking most of the apron, but left the pocket! I was able to center the pocket on one of the exterior main pieces, which was lucky.

I paired the apron fabric with a black and white gingham for the accent. I love how it ties in the black ric-rac on the pocket! For the lining I used a white solid.

The apron had a personalized maker tag on it. It was so cute, I really didn't want it to go to waste! I added it to the back of the bag.

I went with black ruler twill tape for the ties and 1" beehive wooden beads, both available in my online shop!
