Happy Wednesday! Hope you're all having a good week! Fall has official struck here in Wisconsin, the leaves are turning, the air is crisp and I've already started sleeping under my heavy flannel quilt! I am super happy about it. Fall is my favorite season, and I'm going to soak up every minute.
Today I am finally going to chat about this year's Sewing Summit conference! I've been trying to get this post up for a good week and a half, but it's a little daunting! So many things I could talk about, it's hard to condense it all into a blog post. This is the third year that Sewing Summit has taken place, and the third time I've taught and attended. It was a lot of fun, and I'm glad that I went again!
If you haven't heard of Sewing Summit, it's a modern sewing and blogging conference. There were classes ranging from quilting to garment sewing to technical blogging to fabric printing! A little something for everyone I think!
The conference didn't officially start until Thursday night, but I flew in Wednesday afternoon to have some fun around Salt Lake City and get adjusted to the climate difference. The elevation is about 4,200 ft in Salt Lake City compared to only around 800 in Madison. Between that and the difference in humidity, it takes getting used to!
On Thursday, the always sweet Amy Smart took a few of us around town on our own little shop hop, including an amazing yarn store, Blazing Needles! It was super fun, and we all managed to find a few goodies!
Those goodies included some crazy good waffles! We only managed to get there twice, but oh my goodness. The waffles. If you're ever in Salt Lake City you must stop at Bruges Waffles & Frites. They're so delicious and they have awesome frites too!

I spent most of the weekend with my buddy Deedee! We got into all kinds of trouble. And by trouble I mean eating way too much sugar, shopping at Anthropologie and buying all the yarn! Also, she had never been to Menchies! So of course we had to go!

My favorite thing about Sewing Summit is getting to see old friends and make new ones, the people are the reason I keep going back. That makes the actual classes, pure bonus! I took lots of fun classes this year, including Fabric Design with Pat Bravo, Paper-piecing with Christina Lane, Mini Dresdens with Jessie Lathroum, and Hand Printing Fabric with Miriam Tribe!
This year I taught two completely different classes. Different from each other and from what I've taught in years past. The first was HTML Basics for Bloggers on Friday. I think it went pretty well! I was nervous the whole time that it would be boring, since it is a pretty dry subject! Hopefully my rambling wasn't too bad! I could see "Aha!" moments happening at different points during the class, so I'm confident that at the very least everyone took away one thing they could implement on their blogs.
On Saturday I completely switched gears and taught an Equilateral Triangle Piecing class. I showed how to cut triangles without a special ruler and lots of people worked towards a throw sized quilt! It was a lot of fun, I'm excited to see the quilts pop up on Instagram and Flickr!
There is something so awesome about going out for dinner with people you don't get to see much in person, but see all the time on the Internet! We had a great relaxing dinner on Friday night at an Italian restaurant. It was so nice to get to know these ladies better and just enjoy their company. Sweet Kaye! Really enjoyed hanging out with Kaye, we didn't get to see enough of each other last time! We managed to take almost all the same classes on Saturday, we must have read each other's minds!
This is one of the best memories from this year's Sewing Summit. I got to room with one of my very first sewing friends, Christina! She actually got me started quilting and even quilted my first quilt. We've met a few times now, but never had a chance to spend much time together. Thank goodness that changed this time around! This goofy photo was taken in the dark, at 1 or 2 in the morning. We were laughing so hard at the bright flash. There's nothing like laughing until your sides hurt, tears streaming down your face with an old friend. That's what Sewing Summit is all about for me.
A big thank you to the Sewing Summit staff for putting together this event and for having me back! It was a great time!

Hi there! Coming at you today from the Minneapolis Airport! I didn't manage to find time last night between laundry, packing and a fun trip to eat wings with Michael. It was really nice to sit down for a bit before leaving for Sewing Summit this morning! I've started a new project to keep me busy during my layover and flights. I've got a great set of favorites scheduled for Friday, otherwise I won't be back to chat until next week!
I'm not about to leave you with nothing though! How about a little sneak peek of my new collection Dreamin' Vintage, that will be debuting next month! The first round of strikeoffs arrived last week and I'm smitten. I can't wait to share it with you!

Happy Tuesday! I can't believe it's already the end of July, this summer is flying by. Things are about to pick up and be crazy through the end of the year, so that's part of the reason why this was a quiet month on the blogging end. Just trying to catch my breath while I can! I'm looking forward to heading home for a little vacation in a week or so and then things will be back to normal.
I've got three interviews to share with you about Nordika from around the web this month! The first is over at the lovely Village Haberdashery. The next, with my friend Julie at The Intrepid Thread. Finally, today I'm over on The Jolly Jabber. Between the three you'll find out my hidden talent, how I got started designing, the inspiration for Nordika and lots more on my creative process!
I had the pleasure of spending this past Saturday at Gentler Times Stitching in Naperville, IL teaching my Drawstring Bag Pattern! It was a lot of fun and so cool to see everyone stitch up their bags in Nordika!
Speaking of teaching, I've got a new class at The Sewcial Lounge! We're trying something different for the Quilting Basics class. It's now a one-session class and we'll be making simple mini quilts (sample shown above)! This way, if you're not sure you are ready or interested in making a larger quilt, you can get your feet wet with a mini! We'll still cover all the basics from piecing, basting, quilting, and binding. We're holding it next month, on Wednesday, August 28th from 6pm-9pm. For more information and to sign up see here.

HTML is the major language used to write websites, but most blogging platforms allow users to create and design a blog without knowing it. Regardless, even an elementary understanding can be useful, and help you take your blog to the next level! Join me in this class as we break down the basics. We’ll cover how to improve your blog or start one, common coding for sewing/quilting bloggers (available afterwards on a sample blog), and resources for design, and more advanced coding. There will also be plenty of question and answer time, so come ready! Information covered will be applicable to all platforms but will focus on Blogger and WordPress.com.
Triangle Quilt Top with Jeni Baker: Saturday 1:15 – 3:15 pm
Equilateral triangles are a great shape to work with in quilting, and they’re not hard to use! Triangles can be used as a building block for creating other shapes as well, like hexagons and diamonds. In this class we will explore different ways of cutting equilateral triangles, and learn straightforward piecing techniques all while working on a fun modern quilting project. You may choose to work on either a mini quilt or a larger quilt in this class.

I absolutely love graph paper. It's one of my favorite things. I especially love graph paper composition notebooks. They are a bit hard to find (unless you want to pay $8 each on Amazon!) during non-back-to-school time, so I always make sure and grab a few this time of year. I decided to use Diane's tutorial for covering one of them with fabric! So of course I made a Nordika one! I thought the plaid worked well for a graph paper notebook!
After I closed my vintage sheet shop this month (which deserves it's own post), I spent a good week reorganizing and cleaning my sewing room again. I think I've finally found a good place for everything. It's always being shuffled around since it's a small space to make sure everything fits well. Now it's time to make a mess again!

Happy Tuesday! I'm excited to share some news with you today! I'll be teaching at Sewing Summit this Fall! I'm so happy to be returning as a teacher again this year, I love being involved with this great event! Make sure and check out the other teachers announced today too!
Tickets go on sale in one week! They sold out really fast last year and are expected to sell out again, so don't hesitate if you're interested in attending! They go on sale Tuesday, April 16th, 2013, at 10:00 am MST. You can find out more about the registration process here.

I'm really excited to be tackling this topic! I taught myself HTML in 6th grade when I was working on my first websites/blogs. It's not hard, but can be intimidating! I'm hoping to take the fear out of it!

I can hardly believe it's been a month since Sewing Summit. And I haven't even written a proper recap! Vanessa's recap yesterday reminded me I hadn't done one yet. (What a sweetheart, by the way!) As soon as I came home from Sewing Summit last month it was straight into full on prep-mode for Quilt Market. I never really got a chance to digest everything that happened. It was another amazing experience, for many of the same reasons as last year, but many new reasons too.
I really don't like flying, but lucky me I didn't have to fly alone! Megan and Anna came down the night before and we had a little pre-Summit slumber party (with almost no sleeping, haha)! We flew right out of Madison, which was easy peasy. It's only got 9 gates! Our flights were pretty uneventful, and we got a really clear view coming into Salt Lake City. It looks like MARS, I swear!
We met up with Ali at baggage claim and Erin came to pick us up! We were super hungry, so we got to experience In and Out! It was fun! And they have milkshakes, so that was a pretty good way to start the weekend. We headed to Erin's to finish picking up a few things and then headed over to the hotel, the lovely Little America. Now this is where things reached a whole new level of crazy!
The swag arrived. And it all needed to fit into two rooms so that we could sort it and create the swag bags that each attendee would receive the next morning. I took no photos, but you can see some of the crazy in Megan's photo here.
It was a lot of work, but it was so much fun! Thank goodness Erika joined us soon after we started, she is basically a professional organizer, and it couldn't have been done without her expertise! (Also, she is just flat out awesome!) We enjoyed a delicious tapas dinner (thanks E!), and it was back to work!
The next day was check-in for the conference and the Shop Hop! I paired up with Anna (woo buddy system!) for the shop hop bus, and we managed to not spend too much on fabric! I introduced Anna and Megan to Menchies frozen yogurt, and no joke they acted like me for about 5 minutes! ;) That's what Menchies does to you, you can't help but exclaim that everything is cute and talk in a high voice. Impossible to resist. And so delicious!
After we got back, it wasn't long before the opening reception (I took no photos!), and we met up with old friends and made new ones! Anna and I managed to sneak in some pool time too! We both needed to relax before our classes!
On Friday classes started, and they were awesome! I was thankful to have my class on the first day, but not the first slot, haha. I had one class to get some jitters out! Mena's class on having a handmade wardrobe was so inspiring! Loved all the classes that I took!
My class went off without much trouble! I managed to forget to breathe a few times, but otherwise things went pretty smoothly. I think everyone enjoyed themselves! And hopefully learned something too!
Deedrie was my right-hand woman, and a fantastic class assistant! She also cooks and bakes the most amazing things I've ever eaten. Most of all she is a great friend.
I changed my mind on what to wear for my class at the last minute. Still went handmade, but didn't wear my Washi dress. I couldn't get it to look right with a cardigan, and I get cold too easily to go without!
And that's all the photos I took at the conference! I'm terrible about that. I brought my good camera and everything, and didn't use it at all except for a few photos of the mountains. On one hand I wish I had more photos to document my trip, but I also think lack of photos just means I was having too much fun to bother! And that's a good thing! There was a fantastic dinner with friends, quiet chatting by the fires, great speakers at both lunch and dinner, and so much more.
As if there wasn't enough quilty goodness at the conference, there were some flying geese in the airport bathroom!
The weekend ended with my Iowa girls, Deedrie and Megan! We had our first flight together and shared lunch and a layover in Minneapolis. I took my slippers with me for the flights and the airports, I'll definitely do that again!
Overall it was a fantastic weekend! I was so happy to finally meet faraway friends that I've chatted with for years (Christina! Sheila!), reconnect with old friends, and meet so many other friends from the internet! For me, Sewing Summit is all about the people. The classes and learning are awesome, but it's the chatting, eating, giggling with friends that are the best. Some of my favorite moments of the conference were seemingly insignificant moments in the grand scheme of things; sitting on the floor of the office eating leftover chocolate desserts, having a quiet swim, whispering at the end of class with an old friend, talking in bed Saturday night after it was all over. I'm thankful for those moments and everything in between.
Thank you for having me back, Sewing Summit, you guys are the best! Thank you Erin, for giving me the opportunity to teach again, and for everything you do to make Sewing Summit what it is! I have a new appreciation for how much work it all is, I'm glad I was able to be a part of it in some small way.

I'm excited to share with you my newest quilt pattern, Color Hex! I created this quilt for my Creative Fabric Selection class at Sewing Summit, but I knew I wanted to share it with you all too!
It was inspired by a pouch that I made earlier in the year using english paper pieced hexagons to create a color wheel! So many color wheel type quilts are circular, naturally. I wanted to do something a little different and hexagons seemed like the way to go!
This quilt uses half-hexagons so there are no funky Y-seams or anything! The quilt finishes at 45" square, perfect for a new baby or to hang in your sewing room!
Okay, you really just want to see more photos, right?
I used a Blooming Poppies tutorial on quilting concentric circles, it was really helpful! I used my walking foot, and quilted it with Aurifil 50wt #2600 thread. I love how it sinks into the quilt!
Pattern includes instructions for a solid backing or the pieced scrappy backing above!
I love this quilt! I can't wait to find a place to hang it up! :)
The pattern also includes a second version of the quilt, Floral Hex! They're constructed in the same way, but the floral version uses 19 prints, creating a giant flower!

I'm back! Oh my goodness am I exhausted! I spent Wednesday - Sunday traveling and attending Sewing Summit in Salt Lake City, Utah. It was awesome! I'm excited to share my experience and more about my class hopefully this week. At this point I'm trying to stay awake and get caught up. Quilt Market is in NINE days, so there are preparations for that too!
Speaking of preparations! Another little peek at a work in progress using my Color Me Retro fabric!
The Sewing Summit teachers were asked to donate an item to a silent auction set up for the Sewing Summit scholarship fund. I couldn't help myself, I had to bid on this mini quilt made by my friend Christina of The Sometimes Crafter. Lucky for me, I won! Can't wait to hang it up!
Fall is officially here in Madison, WI. Also, I love Minnetonkas.
I finally finished my Pink Vintage Pyrex Mixing Bowl set! I've been searching for the 401 for a while now, and I finally snatched one up for a great deal on Etsy! It arrived while I was in Utah. I am so happy to have this set finished!
George missed me while I was away!

The Sewing Summit teachers were asked to donate an item to a silent auction set up for the Sewing Summit scholarship fund. I couldn't help myself, I had to bid on this mini quilt made by my friend Christina of The Sometimes Crafter. Lucky for me, I won! Can't wait to hang it up!
Fall is officially here in Madison, WI. Also, I love Minnetonkas.
I finally finished my Pink Vintage Pyrex Mixing Bowl set! I've been searching for the 401 for a while now, and I finally snatched one up for a great deal on Etsy! It arrived while I was in Utah. I am so happy to have this set finished!
