Kona Cottons Florette Quilt

Wednesday, October 13, 2021

Happy Wednesday! I meant to share this quilt with you in August, but time got away from me. Better late than never I suppose!

Disclosure: Robert Kaufman provided the fabrics for me to make this quilt.

Last year I was invited to make a quilt for Robert Kaufman's annual Kona Cotton calendar. I chose the month of August because the colors were purple/blue. My favorite colors! I decided to make a throw quilt using my Florette Quilt Pattern with these colors since I'd only ever made it in a wide range of colors. Using only solids is already out of my comfort zone, but solids in the same basic color? Woo! This was a challenge for me, but I was excited to try.

I decided pretty early on to arrange the flower colors in a gradient. I tried a bunch of different layouts before landing here, but I really love how it turned out. Gives it a bit of extra movement. I also knew right away I didn't want to use a neutral for the background. A soft blue seemed like a good choice instead and I'm glad I chose it. It's a little hard to see in the photos, but in person it is much more obvious that it's blue!

For the quilting I sent it to Melissa Kelley of Sew Shabby Quilting. I went with one of my favorite quilting designs Malachite. It just looks good with everything, I swear!

You guessed it, it's bound up (and backed) in more purple! Here are all the fabrics I used to make this quilt:

As I mentioned, this entire quilt is made from Kona Cottons by Robert Kaufman. The background is actually Sky, the cornerstones are Hyacinth, backing is Grapemist and the binding is Noble Purple. The block fabrics are: Amethyst, Blue Bell, Bright Periwinkle, Hyacinth, Lavender, Lilac, Midnight, Purple, Nightfall, Denim, Cloud, Deep Blue, Evening, Cornflower, Grapemist, Tulip, Lapis, Regal, Princeess, and Noble Purple. You can see all the colors, and the quilt mock-up here: Kona Florette Quilt

And here it is in the Kona Calendar for 2021! :)

This was a fun project that stretched me outside of my comfort zone. It was also one of the only quilts I finished in 2020. I'm not sure I'll ever be super into making all solids quilts, but I definitely want to make more single colors quilts. I just love prints too much to give them up!

FIGO Fabrics is a new fabric division of Northcott fabrics that launched last week at Quilt Market. They debuted with five beautiful modern fabric collections.

The folks at FIGO reached out to me this Spring to mock-up some of my patterns in their new fabrics and they stitched up a bunch of great projects! Many were on display at the show, and they can all be found in their LookBook! I'm sharing the projects made from my patterns below, but definitely check out the entire thing here, as well as their instagram.

Florette Quilt Pattern by Jeni Baker
Florette Quilt Pattern, a photo by Jeni Baker on Flickr.
Happy Wednesday! Today I'm here to continue to chat about my new quilt patterns! Hopefully I won't be quite as chatty today, I was really rambling yesterday! It seems I've missed blogging! Anyways, today I'm sharing with you Florette.

This pattern has to be one of my longest works in progress.  The idea for this quilt all started with a pillow that I made to show my Color Me Retro collection at Fall Quilt Market in 2012.  I wanted to mimic the flowers in my Kitchenette prints so I made this little pillow.  I loved how it turned out, so when I got home I started tweaking the dimensions to play up the flower look even more and the idea for this quilt was born.

I started it pretty quickly after I received my advanced yardage that December, but I had a hard time finding time to work on it.  I worked on it a little here and there in between other deadlines. According to my Instagram, I basted it 7 months ago! It wasn't until this past January that I unbasted it and sent it away to be quilted!

The pattern includes two different block options, one is for 15" blocks and one is for 12" blocks. within each block size there are five quilt size options: Baby, Throw, Twin, Full/Queen, and King.  So in total you have 10 different quilts in this pattern! The cover quilt was sewn up with Color Me Retro and Pure Elements in Lemonade and Snow.  It uses 15" blocks and is the Twin size.

I had every intention of quilting this quilt myself. I basted it and was all ready to quilt it, and then it sat around for 5 months. This year I realized I really didn't have the time to do it myself.  This is the second quilt that I ended up sending over to Melissa Kelley of Sew Shabby Quilting.  Since it is a relatively large quilt compared to my usual throw quilts it was really nice to have this one longarm quilted.  I choose the Splash pattern which is these funky, flowy flowers.  Melissa did a beautiful job!

I actually pieced the back of this quilt, I used six different cuts of Color Me Retro! I finished this quilt up again with machine binding, this time using my very favorite solid for binding, Lemonade Pure Element.  Seriously, this is easily the 4th or 5th quilt I've bound in this color. It's just perfect!

For the 12" blocks, I decided to stitch up a baby size quilt using my Nordika collection. Since 12" is such a standard quilt block size, I knew I wanted to include this size in the pattern in addition to the 15" blocks.  More is more, right? I actually have a bit of a funny story about this quilt.  I pieced together all the blocks last spring only to realize I had done my math wrong and the proportions were off.  So I had all these blocks that were basically useless in terms of this project.  I took them apart and stuck them away figuring I'd eventually find a use for them.  Well, this past winter, I did! They ended up in my Nordika Polar Vortex Quilt Tutorial I shared last month!  It was nice to be able to salvage all that work!

This one I quilted myself. I did a simple twist on my regular doodle loops, I made them a bit more meandering.  So a doodle loop meander I suppose! In addition to Nordika I used Pure Elements in Snow and Honey.

This pattern was truly a labor of love, and I'm glad I finally got it published! It's a great way to show off your favorite fabrics!

New Quilt Patterns by Jeni Baker
New Quilt Patterns, a photo by Jeni Baker on Flickr.
Happy Wednesday! I am super excited to FINALLY share some new quilt patterns with you! They've been a long time coming, the Florette pattern in particular has been in the works since Fall 2012! Crazy! Things kept getting pushed back because of deadlines and such, but it's finally time! Can you tell I'm super happy? I am just glad to be getting these out into the world!

I'm only going to chat briefly about each pattern today, next week I'll go more in depth about each pattern! PDFs are available now (25% off!), and paper patterns will be here next week!

First up is Triangularity. This is a simple and straightforward equilateral triangle quilt. In this pattern there are five sizes to choose from: Baby, Throw, Twin, Full/Queen, and King. I show you how to cut triangles using a standard acrylic ruler, but there is a template included too. Finally, I walk you through designing your own custom sized quilt (with your choice of triangle size!).

The cover quilt is the Throw size and it's made up in Luxe in Bloom by Sarah Watson for Art Gallery Fabrics along with various blenders. It was quilted by Melissa Kelley of Sew Shabby Quilting!

The next pattern is Florette. This one has been such a labor of love! There are two different block sizes to choose from, and it also comes in five sizes. So you've got ten different options right off the bat!

The cover quilt is the Twin size, made with 15" blocks. It's made up in my Color Me Retro fabric collection and finished off with Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Elements. It was quilted by Melissa Kelley of Sew Shabby Quilting!

You can find the PDF available here.

Finally, there is the Shining Stars Sampler. This may look familiar, this quilt was originally a block of the month club at Pink Castle Fabrics! There are six different star blocks, sewn in two sizes. The blocks are sashed to make them float across the quilt. This quilt measures 60"x80".

The cover quilt was sewn up with my Color Me Retro fabric collection and Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Elements. It was quilted by Melissa Averinos of Yummy Goods!

Happy Wednesday! It's been a slow week around here, and that's just fine with me. It's nice to have a little quiet, although it would be nice if the weather would be a little more cooperative. Looking forward to a little break from the heat this weekend!

In better news, Nordika is hitting stores this week! I've been updating the Fabric page (found in the tabs above), with a list of shops carrying it.  Let me know if you're a shop that's ordered Nordika and I'll list you there too!
