Simply Sampled Quilt Pattern

Happy Thursday! Time the share the last of the new patterns, the Simply Sampled Quilt Pattern! This is a skill-building sampler quilt I designed for the Block of the Month Club we run at The Sewcial Lounge. 


Knowing that many students would have little to no quilting experience, I wanted them to learn something every session! So, there are lots of different techniques covered in this pattern. There are half-square triangles, quarter square triangles, flying geese, strip piecing, and more.  Most of the techniques are repeated at least once so that by the end of the quilt, it should really sink in!


I made the blocks for this quilt during our first round of block of the month club in 2013.  I finally put it together this Spring! The quilting was done by Melissa of Sew Shabby Quilting. I can never resist swirls, and I love how this quilt turned out! Sometimes you just need some fun, all-over quilting!



Crinkly, wrinkly, quilty goodness!


I bound this puppy up in Oval Elements in Green Apple by Art Gallery Fabrics.  As it turns out, I am addicted to green bindings, I have used lime green for binding on NINE quilts! Oh well, it's just too perfect! I used my Color Me Retro collection for the top and back, with Pure Elements in Snow for the sashing.

Triplizip Pattern

Happy Wednesday! It's time to chat about my second new pattern, the Triplizip Zipper Pouch Pattern! This pattern includes three different zipper pouches: a simple lined zipper pouch, a cosmetic pouch, and a boxy pouch. Do you like the name? It's like triplicate (because there are three bags), but tripli-zip! I was going for a cheesy name theme with all three of the new patterns! :)

I designed these pouches for the zipper classes I teach at The Sewcial Lounge. This pattern was written with the beginner in mind, as most of my students have never sewn a zipper before! Over a year of teaching these pouches has them thoroughly tested!


The simple lined pouch is just that, simple! This is the pouch to start with for a first time zipper user! It's nothing fancy, but these types of pouches get a lot of use in our house! There is a bonus tip with this pouch, I show you how to add fancy zipper tab ends to keep your corners nice neat. Tip could be added to just about any zipper pouch!


The cosmetic pouch is a super handy size that is given shape with the help of gussets.  Don't worry if you've never done them before, I walk you through it! I've added interfacing to the sample because it is quilting cotton, but this can be skipped with heavier fabrics!


Finally, the boxy pouch is a lot of fun! I love the shape of this pouch! It's lined, with only a few exposed seams on either end.  I simply use a zig-zag stitch to finish them off.  In class we make this entire pouch with laminated cotton fabric, which makes it a great toiletry bag.  Instructions to make it with either laminated or regular cotton are included. 


The sample bags are sewn up in my new Geometric Bliss collection, which ships in September! Solids used are Pure Elements by Art Gallery Fabrics. I love using YKK zippers from Zipit for my zipper projects!

Sew Portable Travel Set Pattern

Happy Tuesday! Thanks for your support of my new patterns! I'm excited to chat more about the Sew Portable Travel Set pattern today!

As I mentioned yesterday, this pattern was designed to help you create the perfect travel set for your Singer Featherweight 221. I have been using my set for over a year, and I can say with confidence that it fits the bill.  I have the original hard travel case for my machine, but I find it too heavy and don't trust it to properly protect my machine. Since I take it to The Sewcial Lounge and retreats relatively often, I wanted something more reliable. Plus, this is prettier! Now, let's dive into the individual pieces!

First up is the heavy duty tote bag. Whether you have a vintage machine or not, everyone can use a nice sturdy tote bag.  Before it is assembled, the panels are quilted (with batting and canvas) to give it extra strength along with an interfaced lining. Reinforced webbing handles that extend all the way around the bag mean you can carry heavy loads in this bag without worrying about it! The straps are long enough to go over the shoulder if you'd like.  Tucking at the sides gives it additional structure and shape.

A removable flat bottom makes it easy to carry a machine in it. I used a piece of very stiff compressed cardboard from a package I received, but anything strong will do. Binder's board is the closest thing I can find to what I used. This would do perfectly! Even a thin piece of wood cut to size would work! It just needs to be a material that won't bend with the weight of the machine.

Next up is the extension table cover. There is a small screw on the side of the head of the machine, and it can ding and scratch the extension table when it's folded. This cover protects the table. It is quilted just like the tote bag and is a tight fit to ensure it doesn't move around when in transit.

Finally, the Everything Size of my Lined Drawstring Bag is included in this pattern to be used as a foot pedal/power cord holder. It fits nicely inside the harp of the machine. It may seem unnecessary to contain it, but not only will your bag be neater, but it will keep the pedal from scratching the bed of the machine. These bags are handy for all kinds of things from notions and tools to sewing projects!

There is some wiggle room in this tote bag, so that there is room for projects, rulers, or whatever you're traveling with. The bag can fit other vintage or small machines up to 11" long. It's the perfect excuse to pick up a Featherweight of your own! ;)

I used my Nordika fabric collection for this set, along with Pure Element solids by Art Gallery Fabrics. The interfacing I used is Pellon SF101. I used natural colored cotton canvas and cotton webbing both form JoAnn. Everything was constructed and quilted with my favorite dark gray Aurifil 50wt thread, which is in my Favorite Things Thread Collection.
