Gifted Quilts by Jeni Baker

I'm excited to share three (woo!) finished quilts with you! Now don't worry, these didn't come together overnight! I've been working on them over the last three months.  I am a terrible quilt giver, I get so attached to them throughout the process and then it's hard for me to let go.  I'm finding it's easier if I start a quilt for a specific person, I tend to get less attached from the beginning.  Anyways, back on topic! I just gifted three quilts, so now I can share them! :)

Bella Patchwork Quilt - This first quilt is for my younger brother, Andrew.  It's actually an early Christmas present! It's quite early, but my next two are late, so it evens out, haha.  He picked out some Echo fabric by Lotta Jansdotter and made pillows for his dorm room, so I decided to make him up a throw quilt to match using Lotta's new line, Bella.  I did simple patchwork squares, my favorite! I used 5.5" squares to get the most out of the fat quarters and added a few white solid squares to fill it out.

As always, backed in a sheet!

Red, White, & Black All Over Quilt - The next quilt is for my Mom for her birthday! It was back in June, but wasn't done quite in time, so I held on to it until we came home this week.  (Am I the only one paranoid about mailing quilts? I always avoid it if I can!)  This quilt uses vintage bear claw blocks that were made by my grandmother.  I sashed them and added cornerstones! It's wall sized and is finished up with vintage fabric for the back and binding!

How cute is that vintage fox fabric!?

Rescued Log Cabin Quilt - The final quilt is for my Dad! It's for Father's Day! I thrifted these vintage log cabin blocks a few months ago.  They were already sewn up into two strips, so I left them intact.  Added in some solid fabric to space them out, and voila! I wanted it to look rugged and manly, I think this is pretty close! It's backed in a really cool vintage sheet and is also throw sized!

There we have it! That was a quick run through for three finished quilts! I really enjoyed working on these quilts for my family. I think it might be Michael's turn for a quilt next! :)

Happy Quilting!

  1. I feel better now knowing that I'm not the only one late with my quilty gifts : ) And your not alone not trusting the mail with your quilts. I have lost mail before and really don't want to experience losing a quilt. Insurance can help buy more fabric but it cannot replace my time.

  2. I love the quilt you made for your brother. Even more so knowing that the sheet you used for the back are the same ones I had growing up! Nice job on everything!

  4. I've also found that keeping a person in mind when making a gift works well for me too, so I'm not tempted to retain it for myself. Your quilts are beautiful/handsome, I like the idea of backing them with a vintage sheet too.

  5. In your second photograph, I had sheets like that in college, now 29 years ago. Wow. That is inspiring. Thanks for your expertise and inspiration!!!

  12. Love them Jeni< I really hadnt taken notice of the sheets before, I knew you did it and love the idea, because my grandma did that with everything, I loved the feeling, I want to give it a try. I have the new Modern Kona with the Wedding Ring fabric. I might try using a vintage fabric there. Thanks for sharing, I do love the little Foxes..

  13. That bottom rescue log cabin was a quilt that you could purchase at Sears in the late 70's/early 80's. I purchased the sheets and made a quilt out of them. I always loved that pattern but certainly wasn't into quilting at that point. My son fell heir to it and I think he may still have it. Interesting. Love your blogs!

  20. I love all three, Jeni! (I still love that Lotta fabric - looks so good in patchwork.) And yes I totally worry about putting quilts in the mail. I recently sent a quilt to England and it dissappeared for 2 months, only to reappear back on my door step. I was so relieved that it had resurfaced, that I wasn't as ticked that it came back to me. :)
