UPPERCASE Magazine Interview

Wednesday, May 10, 2023

I'm excited to share today that I was interviewed for an article that appears in the current issue of UPPERCASE Magazine. The issue is #57, their 5th Surface Pattern Design Guide!

Kerrie More reached out last year about an article she was writing all about vintage sheets for this issue! I love to talk vintage sheets, and we spent some time one evening in December chatting all about them. At the time, I didn't know too much about what the rest of the article would include.

I was tickled that a number of my photographs appear in the article, alongside my interview. There are also interviews from other creatives who collect/use vintage sheets as well as profiles on different vintage sheet designers/companies! If you're at all interested in vintage sheets I recommend checking out the full article, it's really cool!

Just a few weeks ago I shared my big blog post with all my vintage sheet projects in one place. I'm linking that here again for reference: Projects Made with Vintage Sheets

Plus, my 10+ year old post (probably could stand to update that!), all about vintage sheets: How to Identify, Shop for and Sew with Vintage Sheets

See a video preview of the issue or order a copy here: UPPERCASE #57. There may also be a shop near you that stocks UPPERCASE, see their stockist list here: UPPERCASE Stockists. A big thanks to Kerrie and the UPPERCASE team for including me in this article.

Happy Making!

Modified Nine Patch Wall Quilt

Monday, January 31, 2022

closeup
Happy Monday! Today I have a finished quilt to share!

cover
The pattern for this quilt can be found in the Spring 2022 issue of Quilts & More Magazine, which is on newsstands now! It's also available to order a paper copy from the APQ Shop here: Quilts & More Spring 2022. You can also order a digital issue here: Digital Copy Quilts & More Spring 2022.

in progress
I made this quilt this past Fall, and it was a part of the Scrap Lab section. So I was sent a bundle of fabrics to use to make a project! I decided to make a wall quilt. All the fabrics in this quilt (with the exception of the backing), were made from the provided bundle. If you're interested, you can find the exact bundle from The Fabric Chic, here: Scrap Lab 2022 Kit - Quilts & More.

I pretty quickly decided on featuring the main floral print by Anna Maria Horner in each block. Sometimes I struggle when deciding how to design a quilt that doesn't have a background fabric. It was a fun challenge to combine all these strong colors without the benefit of a background fabric to ground everything. On the other hand, I think it keeps it really interesting! I find it's really good to stretch myself with projects like this every so often. Taking away control of the materials and having to create something that has a function and is beautiful! It would be a fun thing to do with a friend. Pick out fabrics for each other and challenge the other person to make something. Just a thought!

In the end, I figured you can never go wrong with a nine patch block! I took inspiration from my Vintage Nine Patch Quilt Pattern and modified the proportions. Each block has four fabrics, so that it isn't completely scrappy. Although that could be a fun look too! The finished size is approx 34"x51".

quilting
I actually free motion quilted this quilt! Something I haven't done in a while. It just felt like the right fit. I also used an orange colored thead that I had in my stash, which happened to be a perfect match. I so often just pick white or off white for quilting, so it felt good to use something colorful for a change. Just my simple doodle-loops for the quilting design.

binding
It's bound up in leftover fabrics from the top. For the backing I used some essex yarn dyed linen in black. I'm constantly sneaking this fabric into projects. When we first moved to our house, I thought I would make custom curtains for all the windows, so I ordered a couple bolts of this fabric. I quickly realized how labor intensive that would be and found something ready-made that was very similar in color. So I've been slowly chipping away at my bolts over the years!

Keep on Turning Quilt

Happy Thursday! Today I have a finished quilt to share, that I made this past Spring.

This quilt pattern is available as a PDF download in my online shop here: Keep Turning Quilt Pattern. It includes six different sizes! The quilt in this post is the "Small Throw" size.

The pattern for this quilt was originally published in the Fall 2020 issue of Quilts & More Magazine.

As I mentionted, I made this quilt this past Spring, shortly after we started quarantining. It was a nice distration to work with some nice rich, Fall inspired colors. That season also make me want to reach for more textured fabrics, so I choose Essex Linen in Natural for the background fabric. The prints are a mix of new and old from my stash.

This quilt can be made with jelly roll strips, fat quarters, or yardage. You can really just use what you have! Especially since we can't easily get to the store these days, sometimes it's nice to have some projects that are adpatable. I challenged myself to only use what I had on hand already when making this quilt!

One of the fun things about using things you already have, is that you get to discover new fabric pairings. I've been holding onto this backing fabric for nearly 10 years, and it ended up going perfectly with the binding I chose which I just picked up last year! The backing was just waiting for it's moment, and it finally came together in this quilt. I don't use a lot of brown these days, so it was really nice to use it up.

The quilting on this is extra simple. I wanted to do as little quilting as possible so that the linen would get all soft and a bit fluffy. Ideally I would have emphasized this even more by using wool batting, but I didn't have any on hand. I guess I felt like I needed extra comfort while making it, which resulted in a pretty cozy looking quilt if you ask me!

Pastel Posy Vintage Sheet Quilt

Happy Thursday! I have a finished quilt to share with you all today, and thankfully it's a cheerful one!

The pattern for this quilt can be found in Issue 84 of Love, Patchwork & Quilting Magazine, which is on newsstands now! I made this quilt back at the tail end of last summer, and it was so fun to work on.

Side note, I can't believe the magazine is already on it's 84th issue! Before it was a monthly magazine it was quarterly, and I contributed to the first issue, Spring 2013. Amazing how fast time flies!

The quilt is made completely from vintage sheets from my stash, which gives it an extra soft look and feel. I used eight different sheets for the star points and four different lighter sheets for the background.

It was fun to make another star quilt from vintage sheets, this quilt is my fifth one! Here are a few other ones I've made: Sparkling Cider Vintage Sheet Quilt, Starry Mini Quilt, Giant Vintage Star Throw Quilt, Giant Vintage Star Baby Quilt + Pillow.

Love the good quilt wrinkle. As soon as I received the quilt back from the magazine, I threw it in the wash. I love the look of a freshly washed quilt. That little bit of shrink and crinkle from the dryer is the best. I find it especially nice for vintage sheet quilts. They feel instantly worn in and soft.

The backing and binding are also vintage sheets. I picked the backing quickly but had a hard time picking a binding. I ended up going with a bright green sheet that had a lot of other colors in it too, to pull it all together.

Quilts and More: Trick or Treat Tote Bag

Happy Tuesday! I'm excited to share my project in the Fall 2019 issue of Quilts and More Magazine!

I made a trick or treat tote bag, which you can see on the right-hand side of the cover!

This tote was a lot of fun to make and came together pretty quickly! I based the pieced candy blocks on one of my favorite candies, Smarties! I stuck with Halloween colors for the candy since the main tote was a nice neutral. I used quilting cotton blenders from my stash and yarn dye Essex linen in black for the main bag.

The candy blocks are pieced simply, no paper-piecing or anything. You could really change up the look of the tote by using different colors!

For the lining I used this funky orange and black raven print from Honor Roll by Anna Maria Horner. For the handles I used a plain black solid.

This bag gets extra structure with pin-tucked corners. This is one of my favorite techniques for giving bags extra shape and stability without making them too stiff. I filmed a tutorial for this technique last year, you can find it here: Using Tucks to Add Structure to Your Bag

You can find the pattern in the Fall 2019 issue of Quilts and More Magazine, on newsstands now!
